You can buy Desert Glass on line; this glass is similar to that used for the scarab found on this pectoral jewelry of King Tut.

But where does desert glass come from?
Nasa explains:As a geologist who had spent most of his career studying the Earth’s major deserts, he knew that the glass formed after a massive meteorite hit the desert with enough energy to splatter chunks of melted sand across the extensive fields where fragments are common today. But beyond the glass, no evidence of such an impact had ever been found...El-Baz sorted through image after image of the Western Desert when he came across a ring of rocks surrounded by traces of an outer ring: the telltale markings of an impact crater...The massive crater measured 31 kilometers across and was large enough to contain 70,000 football fields; the site was a very probable source of the glass.

Depressing news of the day

Philippine Massacre number up to 64....some bodies so badly decomposed that they haven't been identified...backhoe operator missing, presumed killed.
Generals who refused to give security to convoy are fired(replaced by their second in command, duh)
And witnesses who were horrified at what they saw are spilling the beans. They thought they were going to kill the big shot and bodyguards going to register, not a bunch of civilians and reporters not connected with the clan.

The fingers are all pointing to the President, who has allowed lesser murders to go unsolved, resulting in a culture where some presume political murders won't be solved and those behind them prosecuted.
Her connections with the clan behind the murders is well known.

One of the most beautiful melodies, originally a song of the Shaker community, "Simple Gifts" and rearranged by Copeland in Appalachian Spring suite.

'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free,

'Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,

And when we find ourselves in the place just right,

'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.

Medical stuff below the fold

Spray on skin for burn patients...using the patient's own skin.

Contained in the thin skin sample are basal stem cells and melanocytes, cells that give skin its particular colour and texture. The structural materials holding these cells in place are dissolved with trypsin, an enzyme harvested from pigs, and then sprayed back onto a burn site.

Once on the burned area, the skin stem cells and melanocytes begin to divide and expand. In less than a week that stamp-sized donor site of skin can turn into a page's worth of new, healthy skin, which matches the tone and texture of the original skin more closely than skin grafts usually do.

Philippine journalist massacre update

Phil Inquirer reports President has declared a day of mourning.
“I am declaring a day of mourning for the victims of the mass murder in Mindanao,” the President said in Filipino during another of her jaunts to her home province of Pampanga, this time to open a P360-million access road connecting Porac to the Subic-Clark Tarlac Expressway (SCTEx).

Another PI story is even more blunt:

Since Monday’s massacre, the Palace has been offering words of assurance that the government will bring justice to the victims even if the alleged perpetrators, members of the powerful Ampatuan clan, are very close to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

But until Wednesday, government investigators had yet to formally invite a single Ampatuan for questioning despite the text message of Mangudadatu’s wife to her husband that Datu Unsay Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr. had led the group of gunmen shortly before she was killed.

“There are certain procedures we must follow,” Ermita said. “We don’t want people to be unnecessarily tried through publicity.”

The PI also notes evidence that the massacre was planned in advance

A military intelligence officer said the advance planning was evident in the presence of a backhoe of the Maguindanao provincial government in the area. The backhoe was supposedly used to dig the graves where the victims were dumped...

The source said the gunmen were to bury all the victims, including the vehicles, but failed to do so as a helicopter flew over the area.

GMA news puts it this way in it's headline:
Cops ‘arrest’ suspects in Maguindanao massacre

Amid claims that Malacañang is going easy on the suspects in the Maguindanao massacre, the Philippine National Police announced Thursday the arrest of some civilian volunteers linked to the crime.

PNP chief Director General Jesus Verzosa also said a member of the Ampatuan clan linked to the murders has sent feelers he will “surrender."

Puppy photo of the day

It's been a hard day at the office.

Philippine journalist massacre update

The death toll is now 40, including at least 12 journalists...and the and a lot of accusations are being made.

Even the ManilaBulletin has the headline "WHAT NOW" above their daily photo of the president, and prints articles pointing out her links with the suspects.

In the article, they note they lost one of their reporters, and that the military claims they can't find any witnesses.

ABS CBN
quotes the government as saying there won't be any "quick arrests".
"We have due process to be observed also, so let us allow the investigators on the ground to come up with [a case] through their investigation," Press Secretary Cerge Remonde replied

Those accused of the murders were her allies, and there are connections with the "helloGarci" scandal, according to GMA NEWS article, which describes how the clan controls the area with the government's blessing.

From GMA NEWS: one journalist asked to go back and get his laptop...but actually he had noticed that requests for security and police had been turned down, and he was worried.

GMA Also reports
:"...The perpetrators, according to military reports, included not just the mayor and his men but also practically the entire local police force, para military forces and senior police officials."

The PhilInquirer
describes the culture of clan wars, and why it is so much worse in Mindanao.

What it comes down to is money. The clans get hold of a political office, and then skim off the top. This makes their entire family rich.
They frequently have their own private armies of "security guards" to protect them. In Mindanao, it is complicated by the war, so a lot of local militias (which are supposed to protect folks from attack) are at the beck and call of the local politician.

The killings are of rival politicians, reformers, and reporters who spill the beans. Usually it is only one at a time, which makes it easier to cover up.

In this case, the murder of the reporters will make things more difficult to cover up.

Expect delaying tactics: if you try to get justice, it is difficult to follow the blame to the top: The killers will be caught, but know if they keep quiet, their families will be taken care of...but if they spill the beans they will be dead.

So the witnesses will not be found, and if someone is supsected of knowing the truth, often they will "disappear" (die or flee).

---------------

In our nephew's murder, everyone knows who ordered the hit, and the names of who did it. We even know how much was paid to whom.

But whether we will ever get our day in court, who knows. The perpetrator is still out on bail, and now one of his relatives is running for his office.

And even though our relative was a US Citizen, the embassy shrugs it off as if it were merely a random criminal attack. US pressure could help us get justice, but I guess because it was only a political murder (not the murder of an ex communist or leftist) the human rights folks aren't much help either.

The politician behind our nephew's murder is under indictment, so can't run again for office. Instead, his wife is running.

And as I noted awhile back: the person who is now running for the political office involved travels with a body guard, even to private residences.

When I ask the staff, they say that the going rate is still 500 pesos for a vote. (about ten dollars). However, since both sides offer a similar bribe, voting might be fair. But calculate up how much money is being spent to get hold of a minor office.

And remember: We are a small town.

In Mindanao, because of all the development money being spent there, I suspect there is a lot more money at stake. It must be going somewhere: Because the people there aren't getting any richer.

Hackers strike again

Hackers got into the research organization for climate change, and have posted them on line...

The UKTelegraph tells why this is such a bombshell: emails such as this one that denies there was a medieval warming period:
……Phil and I have recently submitted a paper using about a dozen NH records that fit this category, and many of which are available nearly 2K back–I think that trying to adopt a timeframe of 2K, rather than the usual 1K, addresses a good earlier point that Peck made w/ regard to the memo, that it would be nice to try to “contain” the putative “MWP”, even if we don’t yet have a hemispheric mean reconstruction available that far back…

And I checked: although the hacker's site has been taken down, You can find the emails at the Pirate Bay...

Yes, I believe in climate change; Personally, I would love to figure out why Minnesota is no longer under 200 feet of glacial ice, or why the 4200 year event destroyed early civilizations.

and yes, I think that one needs to cut down greenhouse gases and switch to non petroleum sources of power.
But I also think that it is being hyped to scare people into a larger agenda that will allow some people to tell us how to live, and let others make lots of money from it.

And until this worry is addressed, a lot of us will oppose the green dictators.

Gossip stuff of the week

I usually try to stay away from politics on weekends, but I love the writing of Dominick Dunne, and MarkSteyn's obituary about him does mention some inconvenient women who encountered some VIP's in Hollywood or other posh neighborhoods...

Steyn's column on Johnny Mercer, born 100 years ago this week, is HERE.
Mercer is mentioned in the book "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil", but is best remembered for this song.

An interesting link: Dunne's fictional Truman Capote (Basil Plant) character is portrayed quite sympathetically in this book....

Why Modern Health care costs so much

A woman brought a very limp duck into a veterinary surgeon. As she laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the bird's chest.

After a moment or two, the vet shook his head sadly and said, "I'm sorry, your duck, Cuddles, has passed away."

The distressed woman wailed, "Are you sure?
"Yes, I am sure. The duck is dead," replied the vet.
"How can you be so sure?" she protested. "I mean you haven't done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something."

The vet rolled his eyes, turned around and left the room. He returned a few minutes later with a black Labrador Retriever..

As the duck's owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed the duck from top to bottom. He then looked up at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head. The vet patted the dog on the head and took it out of the room.

A few minutes later he returned with a cat. The cat jumped on the table and also delicately sniffed the bird from head to foot. The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly and strolled out of the room.

The vet looked at the woman and said, "I'm sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely, 100% certifiably, a dead duck."

The vet turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys and produced a bill, which he handed to the woman. The duck's owner, still in shock, took the bill. "$150!" she cried, "$150 just to tell me my duck is dead!"

The vet shrugged, "I'm sorry. If you had just taken my word for it, the bill would have been $20, but with the Lab Report and the Cat Scan, it's now $150.

Political quote of the day, from the PhilInquirer:
“The Comelec cannot, as its Second Division has done, discriminate against and whiplash gays, while they give party-list accreditation to cock fighters, etc.,” he said.

Cockfighting party? Yup...

Alyansa ng Sabungero (Alliance of Cockfighters), Ang Kasangga, the duck-egg sellers, and Ladlad, a group of homosexuals, are among the 250 groups who filed for party-list accredidation....

In their petition, Alyansa said that cockfighters are considered as ‘marginalized and underrepresented’ and must be given a chance to vye for a congressional seat...

Duck-egg, or balut, sellers, on the other hand, did not suffer the same faith as the cockfighters.

Balut — pre-mature duck chick — is a known native delicacy in the Philippines and is patronized not only by the locals but also of the foreign visitors in the country.

The commission accredited the party in April recognizing the need for the representation of the industry....

what all these things are about is agendas: to promote civil rights for gays (who are considered part of the family here, but ridiculed), the cockfighting party is about countering the rich foreign funding for animal rights and to help legalize gambling, and for the Balut industry is about increasing votes for the Arroyos:

...(because) the party’s head, Maria Lourdes Arroyo, is not a balut vendor but a member of a powerful clan in Iloilo. She is also the sister of the Philippine First Gentleman Mike Arroyo.

"The idea of flying robot fairies was one I had early on, as soon as I heard about the possibility of a collaboration with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering," Hopper said in a press release. "What's great is that they have been a part of the production from the beginning and the robots seem more and more like characters that have always been a part of the story. To see them flying, spinning and bouncing through the air just adds to the magic and mystery of the world Shakespeare created."

MPAA police are shutting down community WiFi sites.

nah, just because they cut the profit of the telecoms has nothing to do with it.

And if you think that is scary, ZDNET points out:

Microsoft shuts down Xbox Game Portal access to users with XBox Consoles that have been modified or are playing pirated games.

  • It’s estimated that over 600,000 users have been affected.
Big Brother is watching you...and your XBox.

------------------
A lot of us worry that children playing violent games, like children who watch violent TV programs, will desensitize them so that they are more prone to commit violent acts.

But others argue that playing video games (like sports) will allow a non violent way to divert rage and anger, so that the anger is defused.

StrategyPage, in an article on the prevention of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, notes:
, when possible, combat troops sleep in air conditioned rooms, and have access to the Internet and video games, as well as good food and other amenities. The video games and Internet resulted in an unexpected positive effect. The surveys found that troops that spent 2-4 hours a day on the Internet or playing video games (even violent ones) had far fewer stress problems. Having exercise facilities available also helped....

The answer is probably both: When there is anger, expressing it in a harmless way is one way to defuse it. But when a person already is prone toward harmful acts, games and media that glamourize violence allow "permission" to act out.

Family News

The flu is going through employees again...Ruby and Joy both had a mild case, and several employees. Lolo and I are okay, probably because we had it the last round in June.

The workmen have been here day and night making booths for the local businesses for trade fairs. Finished now, so everyone can go to sleep before midnight.

Dog killed another kittie, who wandered out looking for mom...I heard him but am slower than the dog.
Sigh.

However, on Sunday, Chano saved a stray kittie that wandered in here...mangy but strong. So we still have four kittens.

Blackie's puppies are starting to get out of their box...will have to banish them to the kitchen, whose tile floor is easier to clean than our hardwood floor in the bedroom.

The Gods must be Crazy

if you have never seen the movie "the Gods Must Be Crazy", and want to laugh out loud, go to link...

You see, there was this coca cola bottle, a bushman, a naive blond teacher, a klutzy scientist, and a bunch of insurgents...

The funniest part: when the scientist got his Landrover stuck in a tree...

The real disaster news of the week:

Chicken wing shortage forces sports bars to punt

Article tells you why:
It's the economics, stupid.

--------------------
Trivia item: In the US, barbecued chicken wings are called Buffalo wings, after the city (Buffalo NY).
And here is how you make them:

House beautiful

When we lived in the US, Lolo always bought Better Homes and Gardens. His sense of design is worse than mine, but he enjoyed looking at beautiful rooms and decor.

Here in the Philippines, if we want to buy this type of magazine, we go to the used book store which sells the unsold magazines from a couple months ago.

But what is amazing is all the design and decor websites available on line.

The link is to The Peak of Chic, one of the best.

Peacekeeping and anthropology

StrategyPage notes: The US Army is teaching cross cultural anthropology by using games. This enables direct work with locals in peacekeeping.

Ironically, I've stumbled across some of their webpage educational sites for various countries (not games, just descriptions). Lots of cultural points and tips for lots of countries.

And this page let me download useful medical phrases to use when I see sick employees and their families.

Medical personnel might consider downloading it if they need to talk to someone in Tagalog (or a couple dozen other unusual languages) in case your patient only speaks Khmer or Somali or Spanish.

The "WAGD" post of the day

could global warming lead to an instant "mini ice age" as in AlGore's disaster movie?

Well, probably not. 12,800 years ago, it took a year to restart a mini ice age, giving you time to buy your sub zero parka before you froze to death.

In humans, however, curly hair is caused by a single gene.

I have most of Sigrid Undset's books with me.
You might have heard of her book Kristen Lavransdattir, which is still in print and was made into a movie a couple years ago.

What I didn't know is that she had written a biography of Catherine of Sienna, now being republished by Ignatius Press.

Ignatius press is also releasing a biography of Dr.Takashi Nagai, whose books helped heal the bitterness in Japan after the bomb...he lost his family in the bombing of Nagasaki.
